Performing a primary current injection test on each phase of a circuit breaker is essential for verifying the integrity of the entire current conduction path, including sensors, wiring, and the breaker’s internal components. Testing each phase individually allows detection of issues that might be overlooked during a simultaneous three-phase or secondary injection test. By injecting high current one phase at a time, problems such as incorrect wiring, CT polarity errors, and poor electrical connections can be accurately identified, helping prevent potential protection system malfunctions.
The primary current injection method is preferred for verifying a breaker’s protection system because it provides a complete end-to-end test under realistic fault conditions. Unlike secondary injection, which tests only the trip unit, primary injection validates the entire protection chain including CTs, wiring, relay logic, and the breaker’s tripping mechanism ensuring correct operation, proper connections, and CT polarity. This makes it essential for both commissioning and maintenance to prevent potential failures.
