A dielectric withstand test, also called a Hi-Pot test, evaluates the strength of a component’s insulation. In this test, a high voltage is applied between energized parts and ground to check if the insulation can withstand it without excessive leakage current. If the leakage current exceeds specified limits, it indicates insulation deterioration or a potential failure.
The HVT series includes multiple safety features to protect both the operator and the test equipment: High-voltage indication: Provides a visible warning when high voltage is present. Supply fault/earth-open interlock: Prevents operation if there is a power supply or grounding issue. Door/cabin interlock: Automatically shuts down high voltage if a protective door or enclosure is opened. Overload protection: Safeguards the test set from damage due to excessive current.
Electrical insulation can degrade due to thermal, mechanical, chemical, and electrical stresses, reducing its ability to block current. A dielectric withstand (Hi-Pot) test detects these weaknesses by applying a high voltage to the insulation. Compromised insulation will either allow excessive leakage current or fail completely through dielectric breakdown. This test reveals hidden defects that are not visible under normal operating conditions, helping prevent equipment failures and ensuring safety.
